1. Choosing the Right Location and Orientation for Your Stable Building

The first step when planning horse stables is choosing the location of the buildings. Often underestimated, this decision has a major impact on both the comfort of your horses and the long-term durability of the building.

The ideal orientation is to position the building with its rear facing the prevailing winds and driving rain, while avoiding low-lying ground where moisture can accumulate and drainage problems are more likely. In France, the prevailing winds generally come from the west and south-west, so the main entrance to the stables is best positioned facing east or south-east to benefit from the morning sun while remaining sheltered from bad weather.

2. Stable Size and Layout

A stable that is too small can lead to stress, injuries and behavioural issues in horses. The IFCE recommends an internal floor area of between 9 and 16 m² (97–172 sq ft) for an individual horse, although the ideal size will vary depending on the horse’s build and size.

Ventilation is arguably the most critical aspect of designing horse stables. It affects every element of the stable environment, including temperature, humidity, microbial contamination, dust levels and the concentration of harmful gases.
